The addition of a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating to a tapered titanium hip prosthesis has the potential to improve the quality and durability of the osseointegration. The tapered geometry affords favorable loading of endosteal bone and the HA coating enhances an early osteoconductive response. Numerous studies support this combination as effective in a wide variety of bone types. Long-term outcomes are unsurpassed and registry data support the success of the HA-coated tapered implant. Physiological bone loading and reliable bone apposition lead to bone preservation, increasing the prospects of long-term survivorship.
