Total Hip Arthroplasty with the Anterior Surgical Approach Using One or Two Incisions

Kristaps J. Keggi, MDCorresponding Author Informationemail address, Lee Eric Rubin, MD

Although a variety of incisions and approaches are available for performing total hip arthroplasty, the anterior approach achieves excellent results using a muscle-sparing technique. Over more than three decades of experience with this technique by the senior author (K.J.K.), data collected prospectively have demonstrated a very low overall incidence of complications and a rapid return to function for patients. The approach can be used in all types of patients with an accessory second incision if necessary and lends itself to a wide variety of prosthetic implant designs.
